As the Obama Administration takes office, it faces new challenges in its relationship with China. The US will be looking for cooperation on issues as diverse as the global financial crisis and nuclear non-proliferation in North Korea. China is now far more powerful militarily, economically and in the skills of its workforce than policymakers could have imagined a generation ago, and this reality shapes its relationship with Washington.

Few people understand the changing dynamics of this complex bilateral relationship better than David Lampton, Director of China Studies and Dean of Faculty at the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) at Johns Hopkins University. Prior to working at SAIS, Dean Lampton was the president of the National Committee on US-China relations. He is also the author of The Three Faces of Chinese Power: Might, Money and Minds (University of California Press, 2008). Lampton is also the author of "China and the Legacy of US Presidents", an article that appeared in the October 2008 issue of China Brief (click here to read).
